On Tuesday, August 7, 2007, neighborhoods throughout Newburgh joined forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 24th Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime and violence prevention event.

National Night Out, organized by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), was sponsored nationally in 2007 by Target and was supported in part by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Bureau of Justice Assistance. National Night Out is designed to:

  1. Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
  2. Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts.
  3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnership.
  4. Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

The national event involves more than 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world, with more than 34 million people expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime.”

The Newburgh Event

National Night Out has been held in Newburgh since 1998. Last year, more than 6,000 residents participated across the city.

This year's local event was coordinated by Glenn E. Hines Memorial Boys and Girls Club in partnership with the City of Newburgh, the Police Department and 48 community and faith-based organizations, departments of government and state agencies. The major sponsor was Orange County Reality Check. Products and services were donated by Coca-Cola Enterprises of New Windsor, West Point Tours, and Leprechaun Lines.

Many community and faith-based organizations and agencies served as host sites offering activities for all ages including block parties, cookouts, music, praise dancing, face painting, talent contests, and basketball, as well as health screenings and distribution of information on health-related issues and community resources.
