Newburgh, like most communities in New York State, has a municipal historian. Her job is to answer inquiries about the city's past; maintain, add to and facilitate access to historical records; promote the community's history and participate in discussions about city planning or activities that can benefit by information from the past.
The City Historian is appointed by the City Council after selection by an independent search committee. The historian reports to the City Manager. The city pays the historian a small annual stipend to cover expenses related to travel and research.
The current City Historian is Mary McTamaney.
She keeps office hours at the Old City Courthouse on Grand Street as follows:
- Tuesday-Thursday, 1-4 p.m.
- First and last Saturday of each month, 1-4 pm.

Heritage Center
In addition to her role as City Historian, Mary McTamaney also directs the Newburgh Heritage Center in the Old City Courthouse.
Operating under the nonprofit Newburgh Preservation Assoc., the Heritage Center presents exhibits on local history and provides space for researchers viewing the City's history collection.
