Career Firefighters
New Firefighters are hired from a list established by the City of Newburgh Civil Service Office. Testing occurs every 3–4 years. The exam is given in June of each year, with applications due about six weeks prior.
A record number of 192 applicants took the exam in 2007 (pdf).
To take the exam, you must be a high school graduate or have a high school equivalency diploma (GED). There is no minimum or maximum age requirement to take the exam.
Candidates who pass the written exam are placed on the list in order from the highest to lowest grade.
Candidates must also pass a physical agility test, an interview process, background checks, and a pre-employment medical exam. Preference in hiring is extended to city residents.
The current (2005) starting salary is $36,330, increasing annually, reaching $50,638 after 5 years.
Dispatchers & Clerical Staff
Dispatchers and clerical staff are also hired from lists established by the City of Newburgh Civil Service Office. Exams for these positions are given on an as-needed basis.
