The Police Community Relations Advisory Board provides a forum for the exchange of ideas between members of the public, through their representatives, and the Police Department. The board is a way to encourage open discussion of crimerelated, public safety, or other quality of life issues in the City, and a mechanism for the public to request particular services and recommend legislation or other means to deal with their concerns.

Report to the Community

In January 2008 the Police-Community Relations Advisory Board issued a Report to the Community (pdf, 109K) on the workshops held in October 2007, the actions being taken by the police department, and the action the community can take in each area.

Formation of the Board

On July 16, 2007, the City Council appointed eight community residents to the board (see list at right). In addition to the eight board members, Genie Abrams was also named as an alternate nonvoting member.

Police Board

The appointments reflect the recommendations made from a careful consideration of 20 applications by a committee consisting of several community volunteers, members of the Police Dept, and Council members Cracolici and Bowles.

Rev. Byron Williams, president of the local NAACP and the Black Ministerial Fellowship, commented: "I am very pleased with the selection. This is a good cross-section of our citizens. The board comes at a good time. It will give City residents an opportunity to have input and feedback on how matters are handled."
